چکیده

The importance of nonlinear effects has been well known in the field of modern high resolution spectrography and in other areas requiring the precise manipulation of large phase space volumes. Simulations for such devices require treating the field as precisely as possible; furthermore the required large aperture of the appearing magnets usually makes the consideration of fringe fields crucial. In conventional proton beam rings, many of the nonlinear effects can often be safely neglected because of the relatively small emittances. This is not the case anymore in large acceptance rings such as those to be used for the various muon accelerator scenarios, where the difficulty and expense of cooling requires the ability to manipulate a beam of unusually large emittance. We will discuss various nonlinear effects including those due to fringe fields and the so-called kinematic correction for proposed muon storage rings, and present novel methods of symplectic tracking and other nonlinear analysis tools as well as schemes to compensate the nonlinear effects.

Deflections in magnet fringe fields.

A transverse multipole expansion is derived, including the longitudinal components necessarily present in regions of varying magnetic field profile. It can be used for exact numerical orbit following through the fringe-field regions of magnets whose end designs introduce no extraneous components, i.e., fields not required to be present by Maxwell's equations. Analytic evaluations of the deflect...

Analytic Estimation of the Non-linear Tune Shift Due to the Quadrupole Magnet Fringe Field

Analytic expressions for the amplitude-dependent tune shift driven by the quadrupole magnet fringe field have been obtained. The magnitude of the effect is compared with other sources of non-linearity such as chromatic sextupoles, octupole errors of the main quadrupole magnetic field and kinematic terms. A numerical example was the calculation on the lattice of the VEPP-4M e+e− collider.

Long-term Behavior of Particle Orbits in Storage Rings*

In a large proton storage ring the particles circulate on narrowly defined orbits for many ~ hours, and undergo about 1012 interactions with nonlinear magnetic fields. The nonlinear fields -include significant high multipoles from inevitable errors in the fabrication of superconducting magnets. In a first approximation one neglects collective and dissipative effects, and assumes that magnetic f...

Investigations into Non-linear Beam Dynamics in Electrostatic Storage Rings

Electrostatic (ES) storage rings provide a cost-effective solution to the problem of confining low energy (β ≪ 1) charged particles and ions, whilst controlling the beam properties, for use in multi-pass experiments. However, compared to magnetic storage rings, the beam dynamics calculations for an ES ring show subtle differences, especially in the coupling of the longitudinal and transverse ve...

Implementation of Benchmarks for Precision Tracking in Storage Rings∗

Currently, there is a much interest in making precision measurements utilizing storage rings [1]. For example, the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab [2] and the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) program of the JEDI Collaboration [3] require measurements of sub-ppm precision. Of particular importance is the ability to treat all nonlinear effects arising from detailed field distributions, including frin...
